At the State of Minnesota, employees play a critical role in developing policies, providing essential services, and working to improve the well-being and quality of life for all Minnesotans. The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.
The Office is currently seeking a Law Clerk in the Consumer Division of the Office. We seek law students from diverse backgrounds, with a variety of experiences and skills, and a sincere interest in serving the public. First, second, and third-year students are eligible for this law clerk position.
This position focuses on assisting Assistant Attorneys General with researching and drafting a second report to the Legislature - due in February 2025 - about the effects of new and emerging technologies on the well-being of Minnesotans. This second report will follow up on the Office’s first report (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https:/www.ag.state.mn.us/Office/Reports/EmergingTechnology.pdf) released in February 2024, which made six policy recommendations to the Legislature and resulted in the enactment of the Prohibiting Social Media Manipulation Act, 2024 Minn. Laws, chapter 114, article 3, sections 63-67 (https://www.revisor.mn.gov/laws/2024/0/Session+Law/Chapter/114/) during the last legislative session. Specifically, the second report will update the existing legislative landscape, build on the research of the last report, and update policy recommendations to the Legislature for additional steps Minnesota can take to protect the public from the negative effects associated with new and emerging technologies, including social media.
The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is offering law students a unique opportunity to work directly with Assistant Attorneys General, as well as Dr. Ravi Iyer, a technologist and academic psychologist who is currently the managing director of USC Marshall School’s Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making, who will continue to provide his expertise and help write this second report. Law students will gain hands-on experience including researching legal issues, drafting written product, and reviewing documents. This position allows law students to develop professional skills and expand their knowledge while performing meaningful and challenging work on a cutting-edge issue that is impacting the public’s health and safety.
Applicants should be prepared to work 20 hours a week during a ten/twelve-week period beginning in September. Law Clerks will receive a salary of $20 per hour. This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment.
